    many thanks 8eights , but i wonder why preload it the same way as before ? when that O ring is hardend and must be replaced , at that time there will be chain stretch also …. so the chain guide is further inwards due longer chain …. and loosing a bit the preset spring tension …. I tought to put the screw some more in than was before… ?
    I would screw it in about 5 mm more , that also puts the O ring in a "new " place in the cilinder …

    Also , without anything to "measure" , those descriptions assume as it is still the factory setting.... but for most cars this is not the fact anymore…. the setting one sees is probably done by some PO who also didn't knew "how to"….

    i can be wrong …

    ...for what it's worth, My tensioner is turned 3.2 times to get the tension correct for 7 years now and no issues, I do plan to redo the top and front of the engine out of boardim in may.

    The E32 workshop manual tells you. A bit difficult to find, go to the link, then click engine, it starts with the 735 M30 engine, then click on the top forward till you reach the section M70, from page 11-14.7.2 , not possible to go directly to the M70 engine https://www.bmwtechinfo.com/repair/main/481en/index.htm

    and this procedure is only possible when the timing case is removed

    On page ...7.5 it says
    Adjusting chain tensioner
    tightening torque for plug 40 Nm
    Important: cylincdrical end of the spring must point towards the piston

    loosen adjusting screw until it no longer touches
    crank engine ones in direction of rotation
    measure distance A
    push tensioning spring against the spring force as far as stop and measure distance B

    Note: a tensioning rail with sprocket is installed since the middle of 1990

    Adjusting distance A - B
    1 = version without sprocket 6 +/- 0.5mm
    2 = version with sprocket 5 +/- 0.5mm
    set adjusting screw to appropriate distance and lock screw by tightening the nut

    thanks shogun ! for some strange reason i can open Repair Manual disc 1 ... (with the E31) , but not anything on disc 3 as your link is a part of.
    So , without removing the timing case , we are working in the "dark" …

    I'm i wright , the cylindrical end of the spring in the piston , the conical one in the plug screw ?

    here is the main link, there go to the E32 manual https://www.bmwtechinfo.com/repair/main/ there to engine and the always click forward till you come to M70.
    there you see the drawings.
    I did replace the o-ring years ago and just set the screw basically to the same position it was before. And since then no problem. The o-ring dia is not very much

    thanks shogun, i will try thad ... have set my tensioner at 4 mm more screwed in than it was... as i had some chain stretch ( 6° and 9° retard cams ) , i don't think a bit more tension can't harm anything. Better than to less …. i hope...
