    Pertronix II Module and Pertronix II Coil

    Anyone running this setup? What gap did you set your plugs to if you're using the regular small plugs like NGK??

    We're running a pertronix II on our build with mechanical tii style distributor (no vac). The II version with the adaptive dwell can be run with coils that have a primary down to 0.45 ohms if you chose to. The standard pertronix I has to use at least 3.0 ohm primary coil or could burn out.

    We run coil part number 60104. Also using Denso iridiums at their gap out of the box; in our case two steps colder heat range IW27 at .028" . Motor is 13:1 compression so thats why chose this setup. Issues with hot ignition coils is the rotor button will burn up in short order. I just swapped to a racing solid strap rotor button (no resistor). Caps you should be using the brass contacts only. The aluminum cheapo ones will not last. An old tip for some improvement is if using a standard rotor button use the one from a 77-79 320i. The nose is narrower for less spark scatter. The racing one is even narrower than that. Wires we've a set of magnecors.

    Even on any street car I'd recommend the pertronix II and just about any coil they have to run with it. Convinced my bro which now runs one on his VW bus(standard coil for street use).
    If near stock motor I'd just run any standard plug brand you like. Back in the day I used to push autolite AR52 race plugs gapped at .050 with bosch red coil etc, it worked well enough.

    Hey AutoX! Nice to see you man! My car IS a "78 and I've only ever used Bosch cap and rotor with brass contacts. I also use Pertronix's Flame-Thrower II coil with 45,000 volts and .6 ohms. I want to be SURE but I think NGK's should be set somewhere near .035. That's what I need to confirm.

    Hey man np. With a flamethrower II coil and brass contacts; decent set of wires could open gaps to your liking honestly. Assuming you want the most out of what you got. Over .050 can have electrode contact on a 1.8L anyways(some piston dome). If not limited on time can trim stock electrodes (ngk's are nice) nipping the tip on them to cut back like 1/16" and re gap to about .040". Should be able to hold the plug and see the center with the strap just adjacent to it like this

    another method is cutting further and can also do a "side gap/side fire" but I don't always recommend it; it can mess with the "protrusion" or start point of where the spark first occurs (depth placement of plug in cylinder)
