Help with basic options programming, please

Hi, I have a 2006 E46 zhp convertible.
I am having trouble with rain sensing wipers and wound like to turn them off without disabling auto lights.
I saw a video where this was done using "progman" software.
I would also like to change some basic options like door lock on drive-off, etc.
I have been searching forum but am way confused with the multiple acromyns out there.
Also looks like people are trying to do things much more complicated than I want.

Can someone tell me the simpliest method of doing this?
What software and kind of cable interface between computer and car do I need?
