Hello all. I was wondering if all 5hp24 transmissions are created equal regardless of gear selector? I have a 2002 540i without step tronic shifter ( 5hp24) I also have 2000 e38 with step tronic shifter (5hp24) are these interchangeable? Without changing shifter and modules?
They should be - but you need to compare the data plate on the side of the transmission - what are you looking to do?
Seems like he’s made it clear... Presumably he wants to swap the E38 tranny into the E39?

I try not to assume on car forums - as long as his 2000 e38 is not a 750.....
I believe a 5hp24 was only used in the wagon. The E38 trans probably bolts up to the sedan's motor but coding the computer may be a bit of a set back.
Once purchased a wagon with a bad trans. Although the E38 trans was a direct replacement; a dealer still needed to clear the old codes.
No Steve all the 540's are same 5HP24. My old one went into an E38. I was aware of no tricks or issues but I could believe there could be one or two.

(you're probably thinking of the short diff and extra beef axles the Tourings get... Those are the most notable Tour drivetrain features)

(also should be no issue flashing the computers w WinKFP, but , of course the wiring and hardware has to be what it expects)

Guess I need to re-evaluate one of the reasons I felt so special....
As a few members already mentioned, the 5hp24 will be same. Also, steptronic is just a feature up top - it can be retrofitted to a car without it. Just a little wiring and you need a steptronic shift assembly which can be replaced by removing the center console.
I have a factory schleptronic shifter in perfect condition if anybody wants to make me an offer (via PM pls). I think I swapped the up/down pins so that the direction matches the early configuration (and my wife's A3) but thats easy to reverse.
