    911 v-6

Watching the show "How its Built" twice they called the Porsche 911 engine a V-6 ,lol, later its a "flat 6", at the very end its a 340hp V6 again!

Meh. They probably just (erroneously) thought it was a 180° V6. No big deal.

No one calls a flat-engine a V. Ever. The show is just terrible.

I enjoy "How It's Made " a lot but it is clear that there is something lost between the time a manufacturer explains their processes and what goes into the script.
There is a gaff, sometime egregious, almost every episode. You'd think they'd ask for the folks they are featuring to proofread the script.

It's a somewhat more understandable mistake than saying a 3 series BMW has a V6. With a Porsche, you could at least argue that it's just a very wide angle V.

The "egregious" part was that the script reader called it a flat6 and v6 in the same story, wouldn't he remember? A real gearhead woulda caught that.

A 180° V engine is a flat engine. The difference between a180°V6 and a boxer is the crank. A boxer has a separate journal for each piston, whereas a 180° engine has the pistons paired up.

Not necessarily - a lot of V6 engines with other angles have separate journals for each piston as well. Here's a Buick crank with six journals:

? ,a flat 180 degrees apart cylinder layout isn't a "V" layout, ,cranks, journals, etc. have nothing to do with cylinder orientation.

I should clarify: see how the journals are paired? That makes it a V arrangement. A boxer alternates.
