I'm looking for advice.
My car started sputtering as I was driving home Thursday, Check Engine Light On, Pulled over, shut off engine and attempted restart. Still sputtered and shut down on it's own. The car was towed to my local German Car mechanic who says Cylinder 1 has only 50% normal compression and there's some metal bits in the cavity. My mechanic is not equipped to handle a repair and The dealer says it needs a new engine (diagnosis over phone). The car is disabled so it's $125 to tow it to the dealer and then at least $300 to confirm the original diagnosis. Anyone with advice?
Certainly a clear dx is needed as to why it happen I wonder if the tech used a bore scope to look around. If it did need an engine I would look around for a good used one, call LKQ.
Sincere sympathies.
What's the history on this car? (new purchase, high mileage, ingested serpentine belt, over boost, etc)
I have 3 BMWs none are turbo driven. Years ago I did have a Volvo S80T6. It lost a cylinder that ended up being an exhaust valve. I'm a back yard mechanic of sorts, so I took the head off and had it rebuilt. Went another 80,000 plus miles before selling her.
