I just got my 2010 X5 35d back from a complete service, 143,000 miles, Love the Diesel, everything about the car, except I now have a code of Incorrect DEF fluid added and it is full of BMW sold to me BMW DEF fluid. I course, I am over 120,000 miles and all is out of my pocket. The motor runs great, great mileage and power, but now need some way to reset the code? Please help if anyone knows how? Thanks, Jim in TN
If the dealer just did the service I would go ask them about it
I did and they gave me the codes (they are 7 I think that showed up on the bill) and said that it was several items that I know the 35d are known to have gone bad and it was about $4900.00 to repair and clear the codes. That is why I am just about ready to park it. I have another BMW X5 that is the old standard 6 cylinder and it is running strong today and never any probelms at nearly 200,000 miles. and our Son's 318i has 280,000 miles and I keep them maintained, but the diesel is just dollaring me to death, but THANK YOU for your reply-Jim
I’ve dealt with exactly the same warning on both my 2011 X5 35d and my 2010 335d. One of the most likely causes is faulty NOx sensors. They do have a finite life span and there have been numerous super sessions on them. They are what senses the reduction in nitrous oxide through the SCR catalyst. This reduction is a result of DEF fluid reacting with the catalyst substrate material and the NOx sensors read the corresponding drop by comparing the values before and after the SCR catalyst.
The other possibility is that the incorrect amount (or none) of DEF fluid is being delivered to the SCR catalyst.
The diagnostic codes will narrow the cause down significantly prior to any diagnostic testing.
DO NOT let anyone ‘throw’ parts at it; it needs to be diagnosed properly.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY! Most of the BMW dealers or even BMW shops here want to throw over $5,000.00 worth of parts to it and will say that might not fix it???? I am trying to find a good mechanic who will help me find the problem and I want to keep the X5 Diesel. All of my work trucks and Toterhome are diesels and never any problems, good fuel, oil and filter changes and over 500,000 miles on some. And it sounds like you are happy with your diesels too. I really like driving the X%, so much more fun than my 2006 X5 E53, but the M3 Convertible is fun too. THANKS so much! Jim
