How is everyone gapping their rings? With or without a torque plate?
My new engine consists of:
87mm JE 9:1 pistons
Eagle rods
ARP mainline (S54)
Torque plate honed
Line honed
I've noticed that even before filing any of the rings, that the end gap is slightly larger towards the inside. The inside to outside difference is around .0001". This is with no torque plate installed. I'm tempted to see how the results very when using one.
The "right" way to do it would be gap them with the torque plate.
The "realistic" answer is it doesn't matter. The ring gap doesn't need that kind of precision to work well.
Since it sounds like you have a plate already handy why not just do it. Certainty cant hurt.
I had my block bored and honed with no torque plate and I gapped the rings without one as well. Not saying its the right way, but 10k miles later at 700whp I have no issues and compression is exactly 165psi across all 6.
You'll be fine.
Nice . What hg and are you cut ringing the head at 87mm ?

Yes, i'll be using a cutring head gasket.
Appreciate the help everyone.
Also, can anyone recommend a decent ring filer? I bought one off of Amazon and it ended up flaking the ring coating ever so slightly. It has a slight wobble from side to side. I was thinking about making a homemade dremel ring filer as an alternative. Thoughts?
