Received estimate $729 for Vanos Solenoids and $1488 for Valve Cover. Feel like this is major rip off. At times, car squeals when coasting and idles rough. Looking at other similar repairs on line, the costs are substantially less. What do you think?
Perfectly reasonable assuming they are replacing the VALVE COVER, which is what the correct repair is, and both vanos solenoids are being replaced. The parts are not cheap, and there is considerable labor time on the valve cover job. Did you look into cost of maintenance when you bought the car or are just getting blindsided now?

I just bought a 2011 535i xdrive with 89,000 miles. I thought all looked good until i pulled of engine cover. Major valve cover leak and also oul filter housing leak. I got an estimate for both gasket replacements from an indy shop and it was $1800. Decided to do it myself. The oil filter housing gasket took me about 3 hours and a genuine bmw gasket. For the valve cover gasket leak, i decided tp order a new valve cover and gasket with bolts as their were many posts that said that was best. Anyway, spent about $500 on new valve cover, and oil filter housing gasket. While i had it apart, i replaced spark plugs and coils and a few misc. parts along the way like the crankcase vent hose that cracked when i removed it. All that savings, i ordered a new water pump, tstat, idler pulley, belt and all new hoses. I'm a bit obsessed.
Good luck!
For solenoid faurls I would normally swap there positions the clear faults and recheck. Techs need to get paid if your not going to do it yourself. You can always find shops that will do it cheaper, but are you comfortable dealing with them.
