New giubo, tranny mounts, what else?

98 Z3M, 110k miles. I'm finally going to attack my shifting problem. It sometimes doesn't want to go in third at high speeds; just seems blocked. It also has a little driveline vibration. From what I learned in previous threads, I'm buying stock tranny mounts, Meyle giubo, putting in Dex ATF (I put Royal Purple in when I first bough the car). Am I forgetting anything? There is talk of shifter rebuild kits, but I'm not sure. If the problem is shift pins, that will have to wait a while.

I’ve heard the 3rd gear shifting problem on RP before but it has been a few years, switching to Red Line D4-ATF solved the issue.

Keep an eye on the Meyle Giubo, I would not have used that brand.

I’d check RSMs and replace them with E46M3/Convertible OE/Lemforder RSMs. Be sure you are running the Z3/Z3-style RSM reinforcement plates.

Change differential fluid to Red Line 75W140.

Did you have the problem and solved it with Redline D4-ATF? It has the same viscosity as Royal Purple Synchromax, which shifts all the gears smoothly in my Z3. I wonder how a particular ATF can affect a particular gear.

According to one of the pundits here, plain old Dex3 is the way to go ( https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...mission+mounts ) I felt like the Royal Purple smoothed shifing, but maybe it's interfering. I'll report on the change back to Dex3.

Yes, I already bought it, will put it in. Thanks for the reminder.

I do not think any of the ATF-based MTFs have a magic ingredient that affects shifting. They all have about the same 7.5 viscosity which feels the same -- Dex3, BMW LT, Pentosin LT, Royal Purple, Redline, and more.

For a change in feel, go to the higher viscosity of Amsoil's 5W30 MTF or a regular MT gear oil.

Fellow club member, and yes switching from RP to RL solved the 3rd gear shifting issue…maybe it was simply fresh fluid but I don’t think so.

Lemforder is no longer available, so brands to choose from are Meyle, Febi, and Dorman.... any recommendations?

Sounds like fluids are targeted to certain gears ;-). This person says RL also improves the 1-2 shift, covering most all of the bases!

The viscosity of Amsoil 5w30 syncromesh shifts great until winter in a northern climate. Then is a bit stiff until warmed up.

Bumping this up to ask one more time: What brand guibo? One person opined against Meyle. I've thought of it as more desirable than Febi, but don't really know. I hate to spend the money for BMW or Dorman, about twice as much, but will if I have to.
I'm ordering plain old stock transmission mounts. I don't do any real power shifting, and don't want any more vibration or noise.
I'm going to use Redline, rather than plain Dex3.

    I'm ordering tomorrow.

a 5w gear oil scares me, and it is stiff in cold weather?, you would freak out with "normal tranny oil" that was prolly 50w

I used Meyle Giubo. 3 years and 23k on it. so far no issues. Also replaced the sleeve and the CSB at that time. I don't have an M model. The extra power, don't know if it will make any difference.

Surprised to see Lemforder NLA, so you can report back on the Meyle unit.
Febi is part of Bilstein Group, it’s pricing is lower than Meyle…never go URO thought.
