BMW's stance on the E31 still seems to be that it didn't exist according to their new 8-Series advert:

I think they thought the E31 would show it up and make the new 8 seem bland. People that don't know E31s would be, "ooh I like that one!"

Not cool! The e31 is still by far the best designed BMW of its time by leaps and bounds... I remember as a young teen when I'd see one it was like a NASA spaceship in my eyes and I did not know anything about BMWs then... I mean c'mon it was introduced in 1991 and today It is still my favorite next to the e38. We are talking almost 30 years ago...

Not true.
They did not sell as many 850’s as they anticipated and introduced the 840 in the hopes that people would buy the one with a lower price tag. This was always considered the flagship and was never meant to be mass produced as the 3-series was/is.

I saw the new 8 on the road for the first time yesterday - westbound A13 approaching Canning Town flyover. Can honestly say I was underwhelmed - just looked like a 4 series with a bigger boot.

So glad I bought an E31!
