Ordered a Continental TR7412UB- OR, will be here tomorow... went to a local car stereo shop and get a Metra harness and it has only constant 12v, switched ignition 12v, amp turn on 12v, chassis ground and then 4 RCA jacks for front and rear speakers. There are way more wires into the harness on the car then the Metra one... and also the Continental radio has no RCA outputs.
So I’m guessing I’m missing the illumination, headlight dimming, speed sensitive volume, sub out, and some other things... is it going to be easier to just cut off the factory plug and wire everything to the harness for the continental unit? Has anyone installed this unit in their z?
Also, what is this white connector at the bottom of the main connector?

I used Metra 71-1784 (radio side) and Metra 71-1784 (car side) and it works great.
Thanks, what was the part number for the car side? You have the same part number for both.... Im guessing they should be different?
Someone on FB mentioned that you only need Metra 70-8590 .
I have also bought the unit, and would be interested in the correct connections.
I should note that I have the harmon kardon emblem on the sub box which im asuming means that its the factory amplified system... the Metra harness I got is 70-8591 which is the bmw amplified integration harness. (Which is the one mentioned above with too few wires and rca outs)

I wired in my own adapter using generic ISO radio harness adapter and a BMW radio harness plug adapter. Match wire colors, splice, done.
Ill also gonna be putting mine up for sale soon. Bit less than retail though I could definitely still return it "as new" ...just not a fan of the mismatch illumination color. Im gonna set up an aux in to my CD43 instead

So then is the amp turn-on wire not required? Also, if there are only 4 audio outs is that all that is on the harness for the car? If the sub just wired into the two rear speaker from the factory?

Well can confirm that just wiring up the Metra 70-8590 works fine. Got it up and running and am thrilled with the sound and look of it when the lights are off. Light on.... what a drag. The color is more off than I thought, but I can live with it. CD 43 is too expensive, Clarion m508 has white lights, and everything else looks like an alien device.
Thanks for the help!

What connector did you use for the radio side?
I used this one:
https://www.ecstuning.com/b-vdo-part...slash-330~vdo/
was suggested when i picked the radio from their site. Worked great.
Universal ISO
Think this was the exact one I used in fact: https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Har.../dp/B00ZCO8GOQ
Its.not rocket surgery guys, high school dropouts can figure this stuff out at your local car audio install shop...
Universal ISO radio harness on the radio side
BMW radio harness adapter on the car side

Great!
That's what I thought too.
My main reason to buy this radio is the ability to connect a usb drive.
I'll try to get it installed too.
I have the same unit.
Like it better than my previous bling Kenwood.
Color, well it’s close enough for my taste.

Where is it possible to purchase a Continental head unit in the states? I've looked, and no one I know stocks the brand.
ECS tuning has them, decent prices too. They have a couple different models and the harnesses.

For example. Note I am not affiliated with ECS, just trying to provide an answer.
Thanks. I've bought from ECS in the past and had no issues. Good company.
Ordered the head unit today. I'm replacing a high end Kenwood unit that goes on the fritz at random times, and is never readable in any type of bright lighting. I'm sure I will have questions wiring this unit.
Thanks for the link.

I have one for sale with an adapter if anyone wants it. I just decided to keep my radio stock

Wish I would have known that a few days ago. I would have bought the unit from you.
Did you have the unit installed in the car? If so, was the screen legible in high sunlight? That is the main reason I am replacing the Kenwood I have now. In the sunlight, it is totally useless because no combination of color or contrast can make the screen legible. I want to be able to push a button to get what I wanted out of the stereo, not stare at a useless screen.
Just a quick question, What wiring adapter did you use? The one I'm going to try is:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Not sure if it is the correct one or not.
Thanks,
Mark
Actually, after re-reading the threads, you did say you might be selling yours. I should have read closer...

Thats also the exact adapter Iinked earlier
Thats half the puzzle. Youll also need the BMW part of the adapter. Then you just wire them together
It's the only one I could find for the ISO units. I thought it should work here.
Since I wired in the Kenwood using an adapter to fit the BMW plug to the Kenwood, I was hoping to use the same adapter for this install. Just replace the Kenwood side with the new unit side.
The only issue I have is the Kenwood unit had wiring for a subwoofer, and the new unit is only 4 speakers. Not sure how that is going to work.
Mark
What amp are you using
With the Kenwood, I just used the HK amp. Sound was OK, as long as the volume wasn't cranked. Not sure what I want to do this time. The sad part is, the head unit has enough power to run the speakers on it's own. 4 x 41 W. Do I really need to run anything through an amp with this system?
It would be nice to make a bridge adapter to eliminate the amp then you’d be all set. If you could find a bad amp to salvage the plugs from and the correct schematic from wedophones manual page then it shouldn’t be too tough. I’m not sure if the stock unit had a separate sub circuit to the amp or if the amp pulled signal from the rear channel. My alpine amp can work either way. Luck for me the PO ran two rca cables to the trunk.
