Since ever I've owned any E31s until today, whenever I searched on any trade publications, the classic 8-series showed up by itself, but for the first time ever, the new 8 series floods the search results and it gave me a strange feeling. The E31 is no longer a loner. We no longer are unique group.
Only a few days ago, the results on Autotrader came back with 28 cars for sale, now 139. I now have to filter the results in order to only see the E31. The new 8 has landed in the dealerships.
Let me know how you guys feel after seeing the link below. Be fun to discuss.

the same as all other BMW's , just a bit bigger . Pitty. The E31 was at least something "special" among his brothers at the time .....
Now customers will be a totally different group i suppose , i cannot imagine one doubts buying a E31 or a new 8 …..
From the link I see that you can part exchange a used CSi to buy a new 8 and still have $25,000 change.
I know what one I would prefer as the new one will be worth $60,000 in 3 years time and the CSi will be worth $180,000

I think they will depreciate faster than that to be honest. The G15 that is.
And as for our own 8s, as long as I am able to keep up and breathing, I will help the E31 values to rise. It’s become my mission in life. LOL.

A depreciated G15 in a couple of years is going to be a tempting proposition.
I actually really like the G15 for completely different reasons than why I love my E31. I don't see it as a replacement.
Apparently they're not going to make a V12 version of the new 8 and the V12 in the current M760i is unlikely to make it past 2020.

If this is the case I honestly would rather have an I6 840i. I'd rather have the perfect inherent primary and secondary balance of the I6 than the extra power of the V8.
I'm not a good person to ask, because I don't follow these things all that closely,
but me thinks the new 8 will always be a 6 that got mislabeled for some corporate reasoning (read: corporate group-think).
Still haven't figured out how it relates to the I8, which me thinks is a more appropriate follow-on in an aesthetic venturing spirit.

Edit: The more I think about, the more I conclude this comes down a clerical error.
Some clerk in some cubicle was instructed to type up the announcement for "The New 6-series", only he/she accidentally hit the "8" on their keyboard.
The clerk still works there. Even got promoted.

I wonder how many years(?) it will take for somebody to rape an M760i and do up a proper G15. It'd likely be a $300k+ venture to do it now, but with the insane depreciation curve these newer cars have (rivaling a theme park water slide), I suppose there's a chance for a 'factory-ish' V12 M8 in the near term. No one would ever do it for the mild (if any) performance gains. You would do it just to see if it was possible, and of course to snub your nose at BMW corporate for having a suitable V12 on hand but no genetalia to stuff it into the G15 chassis. Where has the BMW of old gone off to?

I mean the new one makes over 500 horsepower and it’s not even the true M car yet. I’m sure they’ll stick the 6.6 V12 in it.
Yes correct. No V12s will be made for any 8s.

Very interesting post. I had that same "feeling" several days ago when I did the same search. My 19 year old grand daughter LOVES my '97 840ci. When she comes over to visit, she always want to drive in G-Pa's "bad ass BMW!" We went to a local car show this afternoon and I drove my 8. I parked it in a row of with other BMW's and I had the only 8 series. Got lots of attention. I like the newer 8's for different reasons but not as being a replacement for the original. I just don't see this newer model getting the same looks 20 years from now as does the original version.
I've had discussions with 6 Series owners and it was unanimous the new 8 looks more like a 6 than an 8 Series. I've heard "mis-badged at the very least", "that ain't no 8" and more along those lines about seven times already... Not worried about the E31. Even with the tech/advances of the "newer" model, people I've talked to who are familiar with all three cars (6 series and both 8s) still seem to like the Original ones much better.
I will preface this remark by saying that I have not viewed the new 8 in person. But in the photographs, I am somewhat underwhelmed. The 8 Concept was special looking, but the bean counters have dumbed it down to where it just looks like an evolution of the latest 6 series. I may be fooled in person, but just sayin' ...

The car does look a lot better in person Roger, however, the concept car was much nicer than the production car. You're 100% correct on that. I've seen and sat in both, and can say with this with 100% personal experience.
On another note, the all new 2019-Porsche 911 just got announced too, so the 8-series is having competition already.
