A little pre-holiday oh-my for the fun of it.
Last month while at Buttonwillow, I had this go bang Sunday afternoon. It was not surprising as it seems most every time I go to this track, I bust something in the driveline. I think much of it is coincidence, but there is also more shifting that other tracks which may be a little of the trend cause. Anyway, this flange is an original and has lots of hours and thousands of very hard dog ring transmission shifts in a very rigid drive line. From motor mount to tire, there is no give to temper gear shock. I suspect there was a small factory flaw in the steel that allowed the shaft to fracture over long period of time.
For those less familiar, this is the part that comes out of the differential, and in this case, the passenger side axle attaches to it. Thank you to Metric Mechanic for their assistance in repair and replacement.

Yikes, looks like something out of Mcoupemindy's gallery. Besides the bang, what other symptom were there? I presume sudden loss of power to the passenger side rear wheel?

The design of the diff causes the spider gears to spin free, so there is no sudden pull or funny reaction by the car At the time it happened it simply unhooks the drive. You get a very quick rev obviously as I was WOT. Luckly I was lower on the RPM range so I did not have issue with over rev.

Gary snapped this same part right in front of 12-15 other shoes.
