    Buying help

    Hello,

Recently, I am planning to buy a 91 BMW 850i. The seller asks for $10k. However, it has an error code of 1247 on the reader board. I remember it is the "Secondary ignition issue". Also, I found the sunroof is not working properly. Can someone give me an idea? I will like to know is it worth that money? Is the issue easy to fix by myself? Any comment is highly appreciated. Thanks.

This is an excellent reference for sunroof repair. You may or may not need a sunroof motor, but certainly you will need the parts outlined in Frankies Sunroof repair:
    http://www.frankies-bmw.com/8series/...es_sunroof.php

If you have some mechanical skill, you can do the job yourself.
    Hope this info helps!

Thanks a lot for both of your help. By the way, I forgot to mention the back window is crack too. I heard it is around $500. Is it true? Thanks.

buying a 850 will always be a "adventure" .... unless you go in the tip top restored high price categories.... one will have that issue , a other will have other issues... as i have read here, a clean , complete , interior is great advantage , as parts are expensive…. on the other hand , a M70 engine can be found cheap… here in Europe , approx 1500 euros.
Body & paint are easy visible, and costs are predictable when not to your expected standard. ….
Now , 10k$ , seems cheap to me , more a parts car in what we see over here.... drivers, worth restoring , are well into 20k..... i don't know the US market....

I'd check on availability of a rear windshield.

Make sure everything works. Oil and steering box leaks can be time consuming and expensive to fix.

If you want to see what you get when you buy a "Cheap" one go to my site. It's not for the faint of heart though.

Wow! That is incredible. I don' think I can be that "Hands on" like you. Amazing. Actually, you can build a new 850 from nothing though. Unbelievable! Someone says even BMW mechanic can not do repair for 850. Per your blog, 850 seems like my Toyota that kind of easy to maintain. If you don't mind, I have to bother you a lot after I take this adventure. Please keep helping me.
