Opinions needed on possible X5 purchase

    Hello all,

I am considering upgrading from my E46 to an X5. I know all used BMW need to have the cooling systems look at. But can you all give me a list of things to check out for model years 2011-2014?

    TIA

    Looking to purchase a

Hello - the 3rd generation of the X5 started in 2013, so the comparisons would be between 2 generations. Take a look at the links below.

Less than a week ago, my wife bought her fourth (4th) X5, if that gives you any insight.

In chronological order, and what details I can recall:

'02 4.4 iS; virtually faultless (leased for 3-yrs) except for my wife running over a Camry... (VERY MINOR cosmetic damage to front bumper, and a couple bent suspension pieces). I christened it "the sportscar with a view!"

'05 4.4iS; threw a CEL code @ 1200 miles, requiring the ("new") Valvetronic rocker-arm shafts be replaced (1 or 2 days in shop for service). Remainder of 3-yr lease was faultless. This one was Kalahari Beige/Truffle Brown__NEVER saw another one that color (wish we'd have bought it off lease ).

    ('08 535xiS)

'11 X5 35iS; bought this one outright and ran it until last Friday morning. 122,000 miles, and a few areas of concern (in no particular order...): I replaced the electric waterpump (after taking apart half the car to get to it); I replaced the LF upper strut bearing after the bush disintegrated and metal on metal banging (RF was still perfect, go figure); head-cover cracked creating an oil leak (composite cover over valve components, NOT the cylinder head itself) done by independent shop after I swore off working on it...
Overall impression of the 2011 still remained positive, as even though it did develop the above issues, I would still consider it dependable (NONE of those items ever stranded or rendered it inoperative before scheduling repairs. Although, the battery did die once, requiring its only trip on a flatbed.

And finally, last friday that '11 model was traded in ($8k_whoopee) for a CPO 2016 X5M with 16k miles. My wife wanted a white X5. and now she has one__even outfitted with Dinan CAI, Exhaust and Stg-2 piggyback ECU (good for a reported 716hp/702tq).

    I'm thinking this last one's a keeper...

Just bought a 2012 x5 35d and dont regret it at all. The car has an open recall on it for the idler pulley which mine is currently in the shop for. I am having a horrible time with the dealership in regards to customer service but I would still deal with this all again if it means I get to have this car.

My only regret about the X5 is not getting it sooner! And the diesel is great! Plus with a 2010 to 2013 there are some nice upgrades you can do to the diesel engine.

Thanks for the replies. Glad to hear your positive experience with the V8.... others have told me to stay away from them.

what are some key things to check for when researching ones for sale?
