    P0445 Mystery

I have been fighting a check engine light P0445 (Large Evap system leak). I have tried all the usual sources and am still getting it.

One part of the system that I don't understand is the rattling sound inside of the Evap Tank. There is something inside of this tank, but I don't know what it is.

Does anybody know what this rattle is doing? It doesn't show on the system schematics.

I'm in the same boat, can't find the leak. I just recently removed and tested the purge valve and its good. One symptom is a wet gas cap seal, which means the gas condensate is not getting sucked out when the purge valve opens. which could mean their is a leak in that blue line that runs from front to rear. I've removed and checked the tank behind the gas cap twice lol, didn't shake it though.

Unfortunately, a Smoke Pro is $1249!

There's a bunch of these on ebay and you can find instructions to build them on youtube. They work with only about 0.5 psi and I think those gas grill pressure regulators are actually a bit less than that.

Twilight, I made one of these smoke machines and it works well. The iron I used was a cheap one (42W from the wall), I wrapped the sock around it and soaked it with mineral oil. Have not tried it on the gas cap yet, have to make a seal, one guy used a rubber glove and a rubber band. Realize it can also leak at the fuel pump seals.

The above smoke discussions have been very informative, but they do not address the original question: Does anybody understand what is inside the Evap Tank? There is something inside there that rattles when you shake it. Does anybody know?

Charcoal. Not the Kingston Briquette type.

And keep this in mind. Smoke pot systems that are designed to be used to check the evap systems are limited to less than 0.5 PSI, that pressure taken from a nitrogen (inert) tank (or at least the smartly recommended procedure).
Putting an evap system under pressure with air (O2) in the presence of fuel (gasoline) produces a Molotov cocktail effect which, in the event of ignition, increases the intensity of that reaction.

He's asking about the condensation tank not the charcoal tank this under the spare tire. The only thing I can think of that may be rattling in there is the internal side of a nipple broke off.

No. I have two of the Evap tanks and they both rattle. Nothing is broken on the outside of these two tanks.
