How do you clean or replace tail light and brake light contacts on your E38?

As my BMWs age, they all seem to develop bad connections on the screw in light bulb holders for the rear lights. On both my (now deceased) e34 and my two e38s I get burned contacts, intermittent connections and have to remove and re-seat the plastic bulb holders. I bought a new bulb holder for a brake light, 1 year later it looks like the plastic was burned all around one of the metal contacts. I guess I need to clean or replace the metal contacts in the car body that touch the screw in plastic bulb holders, does anybody have experience with what works?

Contact cleaner and bending them back up, as a first try.
