So I got done replacing the head on my 98 528i M52 single-VANOS. The car runs great, but it kicked a P0015 (pretty sure it was P0015, might have been P0014?) for intake cam position. I opened it back up to check timing and found the intake cam several degrees retarded.
I followed the Dr Vanos instructions here: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...88282716730680
Once again, everything looked peachy. Crank the engine by hand, check the blocks, all is well. Then cranked it by hand again and found the intake cam ever so slightly retarded (too far counter-clockwise for the blocks to be installed). By the time I cranked it to TDC1 4-5 times the intake cam was quite a bit off. But every time I crank to TDC1 the exhaust is perfectly timed.
WTF am I missing here? All I want is to get this car back on the road!
I didn't read thru the Dr. Vanos procedure, but I did use the Beisan Systems procedure without a hitch. Maybe reading thru it will prompt you to see if any steps were missed, with particular attention to the part for back-tensioning the vanos prior to mating the helical gears when re-installing the VANOS unit.

It's possible that your cam sensor is bad. And nothing is wrong with your mechanical setup.
