    New motor mounts!

Changed my motor mounts today. So far this has been the easiest job I've undertaken with this car. It took a frustration-free 20 minutes...and only that much because it took a little finesse to lower the engine onto the studs neatly. The mounts were a complete wreck.

Right side was torn and soft. The left side was held together with hopes and good wishes...but nothing else.

I recently had a lot of trouble addressing a leaking power steering fitting and I think the damaged mount is the culprit. The engine was sitting quite a bit lower on the left before I changed the mount and the line, when I finally got it removed, had obviously been struck on the engine side. I think the engine would tend to lean that way, and hit the fitting, which loosened it over time. I think the engine was moving a LOT. While I was down there I inspected the exhaust...I have two sections that are fixed with clamps and they'd wiggled almost completely out.

I think this will improve some things.

The law does NOT determine "right" from "wrong". They are unrelated.

If you put cheap parts on your car, you will soon have a cheap parts car.

What are some obvious signs that these will need to be replaced soon? I doubt mine are not original to the car.

You can physically inspect them. They're visible. If the rubber is deteriorated, change them. They're also not very expensive so it might be worth changing them just for the sake of doing it. Mine you could see some of the rubber damaged just by looking down on them from the above.
