81 245 Transmission Overhaul Instructions?

The OD 5 speed in my new 1981 320i needs synchros. I have factory manuals and a Haynes but is there a real-world writeup on how this goes? I know there are couple of ways to do it that don't involve ALL the special tools in the factory manual. Thanks, A.

the G242/245 is not a difficult transmission to disassemble, i have done it several times, probably the hardest thing to do is removing the front case. do not force it off with brut strength and do not pound on the input shaft, but rather use heat and a properly designed puller.

be sure to replace the front input shaft bearing. it was always this bearing that had me breaking down the Getrag 242/245.
