That's for the alternator cooling on early 750s.

For the Northerners (Cory & J.F.) I'd like to suggest another meeting: the Vintage at the Saratoga Automobile Museum on 13 July 2019. That was the first show I ever attended with my E32 in 2015: I drove there on the day I passed the SAAQ and got the car registered. J.F., this could be a one-day trip for you, leave early in the morning and be back home by 7 or 8pm.
I'm glad someone else caught that! You've got a photographers eye lol, I chose that photo of 2 nearly identical, the other did not have the sign in place. Thought it added a little something to the photo.

Glad you liked it Jeff, I can send you the original full size photo uncompressed if you'd like, for your desktop.

It's an air intake that leads to the alternator via ducting to keep it cool.

EDIT: Did not realize the above was answered already, did not know there was a second page.

Erich, you came up a few times in our conversations, the community would not be what it is without all your immense help and dedication to these cars, would love to visit you and your shop in Japan someday, I know you guys have a big E32 community there.

talking about E32 fix, i should have collected my e32 from a mechanic yesterday, just after it warm up, about to go out from his gate, i click test 09 on OBC, baaamn 18V of charging, cluster light is bright as hell lots of warning popped up, "ESD Regelt" light circuit, dip beam, side light, and alot of warning i cant remember....i reversed back to his place, let him check further more, i changed my regulator twice, same problem, after it fully warmed up, charging goes nuts. well since this thread "gets together" an enthusiastic E32 owners, any ideas on my problem?

What was your car in for to begin with? Was it an electrical problem? Do you mean you changed the little voltage regulator that attaches to the alternator twice and your still pushing 18 volts from the alternator when the engine is running?

Its 1993 e32 v8, initially the charging bulb did not lit up, thus thinking thats the prob that it wont charge, i changed the bulb and now the battery light works, but charging remains not working, took out the alternator for rebuild, works well for the first few days, then it charges mad 18v, then i changed new regulator again, its working fine for first few days again, then back to 18V charging, the funny thing is, it only charges 18V after the car is warm..idling good at 14.0V, slight increase in RPM will ramp the charging output to 18V

Maybe you need to buy a factory rebuilt alternator. You can get a Bosch AL0742X, a direct fit for your car with a two year warranty for just over two hundred dollars. Sounds like your rebuild just didn't work. Electrical gremlins in these cars are tough, but if your alternator is charging 18 volts with a new regulator and then again with a second regulator (and your battery is good), then I think it's time for a replacement part. Bosch alternators last a very long time. On my M30 motor I've replaced just about everything over the past 28 years, but the original Bosch alternator is still putting out 13.7 volts. Big ugly gold alternator sitting down there in a super clean engine bay, but I'm not touching it. Good luck...........Jeff

i sent the alternator again, just let the alternator repair shop look at it. he remember that i rebuild the alt from him, he is willing to take a look again..hopefully without any charge. im still wondering, why it only ramp up the charge to 18v after the car is fully warmed up..when its cold, it charges like a champ at steady 14.2-14.5v idling

so it turned out, the guy who initially rebuild my alternator fked up, theres something on the rectifier, some sort of small cable, its not soldered properly, the solder came off, wire hanging, the air from the rotating armature fin is enough to move the wire and short it to ground if its revved, causing uncontrolled field excitation current on the armature, thus producing tons of voltage. now its rebuilt by another shop, new armature, new rectifier diode, idling at 14.3

just to share my e32 730i m60, need abit of bodywork

So this part of your explanation sounds like it was plucked from a PhD thesis belonging to a grad student finishing up his doctorate in electrical engineering at M.I.T. Either way, it's nice that your alternator is humming away.......................
