Just a fun no right answers thread. My coworker and I were talking about our cars and how they're getting up there in mileage and whatnot (mine e60 530xi, his e65 745Li) and were discussing potential upgrades.
Ideally a pristine, maintained and documented used BMW would be the one to go for but what Bimmer's are you looking at when it comes to your next car?
For you, an F series 535xi. Similar but newer and faster and probably better highway mpg.
Naturally aspirated, late model E90. If you're talking reliability and great mileage.

I agree on a late model e90. I'd love a f series 535 with a sport package but after seeing some repair costs associated around turbo's with my brother's 335i, I think I'll stray away from that for a bit. My vote is going for an e39 530i sport or an e32 735i because I miss the heck out of that car!
After owning an e39 530i and spending a lot of time behind the wheel of my brothers e32 735i, I'd definitely suggest the 530i.
Pick a generation where your budget would buy the best example you could possibly find, then buy the best example you can find. Unless your budget allows for a nearly new example, the key is going to be finding one that's been taken care of.

BMW - where "Why doesn't everybody build cars the way they do?" meets "Why can't they build a car the same way everyone else does it?"
E39. The online support is amazing and parts availability is solid.
I have to vote a 2 series. My 228i is, I think, one of the few series actually made in Leipzig. It has not had any recalls. I constantly receive favorable comments on the styling. It struts it stuff on the freeways.
