I attended a classic car auction in Greensboro, NC two weeks ago. A 1984 325e in incredible condition with cloth sport seats, manual transmission, and only 29k miles was auctioned. The car was like new with all records. I bid on it, but lost. Sold for $18,250 (not including the 7% buyer's premium). Reserve was off at $17,000. I was semi-shocked that this e sold for this price, despite the low miles and condition. Turned out an owner of a Porsche dealership there in the area purchased the car. Now I see it listed at a dealership specializing in high end cars for - are you ready for this - $39,000. What!! Where are these prices headed? (Although they'll never get the asking price.
Thought the e30 community might be interested in this bit of information.
I believe it. there are a number of them here in texas that are not that low mileage or stock and selling for 12k or more

Although Hagerty's Valuation prices may be somewhat higher than the real-world national average ... a 1972 BMW 2002 is worth ...

Drift crowd has increased their popularity for sure, brought more young drivers in, and by nature most young drivers destroy shit. I find it odd you don't see anyone drifting the e21, they are cheaper and even more tail happy than an E30 when given more horsepower.
With inflation, the E30 value indeed has been super stable, even out performing the stock market during the recession if you look at it that way, but in no way have they out performed the market with the exception of the m3, which is just a stupid purchase for anyone who believes cars should be driven
The m3 versus aftermarket tuned 325i E30 performance experience is so close, the non m appreciation makes sense because drivers can pretty much experience the same thing for a fraction of the "collector" prices
I just went to the local Pull-A-Part Saturday (in Ohio) to look for tan leather BMW seats for my E30 convertible ... and guess what somebody junked? ... A 1998 BMW Z3, manual transmission, 1.9L engine!
What in the world is wrong with people?! ... they probably got less that $300 for it! This car wasn't wrecked! ... and it was in fairly good shape! No rust, and no dents (other than what the front-loader probably did putting it on the yard). There were some slight cracks in the tan leather seats, or I would have bought them!
If the engine was blown ... fix it! ... If the transmission or rear end were broken ... replace them!
When I walk through wrecking yards it just amazes me what people will junk! While Z3's are not going for premium prices right now (minimum about $4000) ... just park it in a garage somewhere ... and WAIT!
I've learned the hard way in life. In about 1969 I was young and stupid ... and I had a 1959 Porsche Cabriolet with steel factory hard top that had been completely restored by a doctor ... but his wife had run it without oil and threw a rod. I had an old REALLY rusty 1958 Speedster with a good engine (but it burnt oil) ... so I bought the Cabriolet and put my 1958 engine in it ... it ran great other than burning oil.
I sold it to a college kid in Kent for .... $300! ... cause I needed the money!
Today, there are three for sale on Hemmings ... one for $108,500, one for $200,000, and one for $225,900!

I feel much better about the '84 325e that I bought for $1900 a couple of months ago.
you have to modify them because they spin so easily. my 80 320i would come around very easily and it still had the m10.
but, the e21 is a blast to drive.

I think the technical term is, "snap oversteer". I have an 83 E21 that I love, and one of these rainy or icy days, I'm going to take it to the large parking lot around the local stadium, and experience that oversteer!
oh man, its fun. I loved my little e21 and, looking back, I should have kept it. I already had a spare 2.0 engine and recaro seats in it. both sway bars and the trunk tower bar with the battery tray. it was such a fun car.
and the stock radio mounting position is awesome. that was my favorite thing about the interior

That price is ridiculous for an eta. I have been following the E30 market for the past year now, and last year I saw (on a Japanese auction) a mint 325i M-Tech with only 10k miles sell for 1.5 million yen (about $13.5k before shipping and everything else). I'm guessing the winner spent about $16-17k to get it here and registered and all that. Then I saw it on BaT sell for $30k! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1990-bmw-325i-29/
So that seller almost doubled his money, I'm guessing he didn't need to do anything with the car once it arrived except give it a wash.
And yes, I did try and bid on it but didn't have enough to win it. Thought it sold for a lot anyways, but had no clue it would be worth $30k in the states. Then again, this one was almost a museum piece with that kind of mileage.

I picked up an 87 325iC at a farm auction in Wisconsin for $2,400. Not a speck of rust, super clean, put in $2000 more for a new driveshaft bearing carrier (Germany) new front shocks and tie rod ends, replaced the head bolts and put on new vrederstiens and now I'm up to 5,000$
But the thing runs like a dream, daily driver perfect for SW Wisconsin hills and curves.
