I guess time can give some perspective to appreciate the Z3.

Ha.. absence makes the heart grow fonder maybe? Those us of that drive the Z3 regularly know its a magical blend of light weight, balanced handling, and adequate power (old trailing-arm rear suspension notwithstanding :-)
Related: I have zero desire to own the new Z4. The car looks as heavy as it is.
Lol “We spent the rest of the day looking up used Z3 prices. Not kidding.”
Surprising good value for what you get.
I’m amazed that they remain so affordable.
Compared to a similar vintage Porsche or even a Honda S2000
These Z3s are a bargain.

Its funny because I remember when the car was new, it was looked down upon as a Barbie car, or a hairdresser bmw... I too didn't think much of the Z3 until I got a ride in Gary's old 2.8 coupe at bimmerfest one year. I was sold after that hehe.
Suspension: Bilstein Sports, GC Coilover conversion, IE Subframe Bushings, IE RTABs, M roadster sways, M roadster front control arms, M roadster Front calipers/hubs.

I don't not like the new Z4, but with a minuscule amount of grill manipulation, and putting the circle in the middle, it would too easily pass for being a Mercedes SL-type__especially in silver/gray.
Ah but alas, not in my budget anyway, and with a pair of M Rdstrs ('99 & '01) AND an M Coupe ('99 with an ES/TS) there's no need for it to be
I still hope for success exceeding their sales targets though, as keeping the buying public supplied with new and engaging sportscars is always a good thing. Who knows, I might eventually wear out one of ours and need a new one someday? Nah!
I've no doubt that the Z4 is a competent sports car, but it is a completely different design philosophy -- just like the Z1 is different from the Z3 and the Z8.
Could BMW ever nail the Z3 philosophy again? Mazda proved it's still possible to make a successful, small roadster. BMW , on the other hand, has backed itself into a corner. There probably isn't a market for a car like the Z3 anymore, or at least not at the price that BMW might feel it needs to charge.
This is a bit off topic and off thread, but check out Enthusiasts Auto Group's BMW collection they are selling just in time for Christmas! Only $2.3 million
EAG has some amazing prices.
Even more amazing, some people pay them.
