    -=HELP Writing Vin Using WinKFP=-

    HELP.jpgHELP2.jpgHELP3.png

above are some pictures of the problem im having, this is a 1997 bmw 318i, im using the obd to 20pin connector under the hook to connect my obd/ads device, not sure how to get the ads part to work. All i want to do is write the vin from the car to this currect dme that shows a different vin as you can see in the 3rd picture, im getting a error showed in the 1st picture. Please help.. Also this might be related to the dme not synced properly, i try to connect a obd2 scan tool to the car and it doesnt work, i gets power but just says unable to communicate. Thanks in advance.

The dme is synced fine if your car starts and runs.
If I remember correctly, that dme needs "programming voltage" in order to enable write mode. It gets a little complicated. And if not done right, you will brick it.

I have a battery charger hooked up to the car when i connect to the obd to 20pin connector under the hood. How would i go about enabling write mode on this dme? Im not 100% sure why im unable to read the codes or even connect to the obd2 on the car, it gets power but its unable to connect using any obd2 scanner. i was going to go back and install windows xp on that same laptop i was trying to connect with. Thank you for your on going help with this issue.

Programming voltage has nothing to do with a battery charger. It has to do with adding +12V down the programming voltage line, similar to what needs to be done for MS41 dme for the 6 cylinders.

It looks like you got data to read just fine to me if your VIN and ZB numbers were read... which means you have some sort of connection.
It has nothing to do with windows XP.

BTW i have the obd/ads tool 16pin to 20pin under the hook cable when i try to change from OBD to ADS i get a error but in german even when i click on the ads button on the obd/ads tool. i read on a older post on this site im going to try to bridge pin 14 and 18 together and see what happens. i fry it i'll get another on ebay for $30 lol and do the ews sync again, i need to get this correct vin on the dme so i can do emissions on the car, plus the obd2 connector wont respond to any code reader. it has power but says unable to communicate. Thanks for your help buddy...

If this is Arlington TX, you have nothing to worry about if the VIN is different for emissions inspection. It isn't a problem if different.

Need to confirm by wiring diagram for the 318, but yes, bridging 14&18 would add +12V for programming voltage.

What are you using to connect to the car? A USB cable? You should not be using the ADS setting then. ADS setting is strictly for when you are using an ADS interface (not on USB, but serial port, and totally different interface).
That being said, it will work fine through USB.

Sounds like your setup and config is all sorts of messed up. Proof is the "data transmission disturbed" error. YouTube with a big mix of other sites not a good source of info for any of work.

Install this diag pack in post 1 exactly as I described in instructions. Do not change config, except the COM port number and cable latency, as described in the connection troubleshoot pdf.

It already contains all the E36 flash files, and is set up correctly. Again, do not change any other settings.

Then you can flash once you set programming voltage (enable write mode).

Im using this product but i also have the usb to obd2 connector and also the bmw scanner 1.4
    http://www.one-stop-electronics.com/...&product_id=17
but i was trying to get the ads part to work with inpa but i get a german error when i change the config file from OBD _ to ADS _. also in windows 10 i have the port in Com 1 but im unable to change the latency does not give me the option to do so maybe i had to use it in Windows XP compatiablity mode? Thanks buddy.

You can simplify everything by using just the USB obd cable you used for ewssync.

Install INPA pack configured for OBD usb cable, then at the 20-pin port use wire to jumper pins 2+17 (forwards the diag line to OBD port in car)) and another wire to jumper pins 14+18 (should apply programming voltage to dme).
Then with cable connected inside car, perform a winkfp flash update with your VIN typed in.

i actually used the 20pin under the hood to do the ews sync using the obd/ads interface using serial port.

    - - - Updated - - -

But the way you just told me is so much easier i will try that later tonight... so all under the hood in the 20pin put wire from 2-17 pin and then another 14-18 pin and then just use winkfp to flash the dme and current vin number of the car. i look up the zb its 1430343 on the dme.

How would i get ads to work on my older windows xp laptop? when i try to install the same package you directed me to, when i try to install the prerequisites PathEditor it says not a win32 app. installed cdm v2.12.00 whql and the inpa software.

The reason im hell bent on ADS is i bought it so i might be able to help other friends with older bmw like my co worker with a 1995 m5 i believe he has. Thanks again.

If you insist on ADS, then read the entire first post in the link above. You will find your answer. ADS needs a much older version inpa pack.

Also FYI, Dell laptops complicate things with their serial port.

Ok i just installed windows 7 and i just installed the INPA as directed via the link and hopefully i can try to flash it tonight. If im unable to do this tonight im not sure what i will do, the car starts but in May of 2019 i need to do the emission test and the obd2 port isnt responding to any of the obd2 scanners so the emission machine will be unable to communicate with the car and it will be rejected from testing.

Uncheck Programming voltage, uncheck test checksums, and uncheck bootsector update, and try then. Still make sure you have the wires bridged on 20-pin port as described above.

Will have to do it tomorrow shop is closed on sunday, i did uncheck Programming Voltage but not the others, i did get a error but it took like a min for the error to come up..

so i will uncheck programming voltage, uncheck test checksums and uncheck bootsector update... also i will bridge the pins at 2+17 and 14+18 correct?
