Hey all,
Trying to diagnose a few codes on my buddies new to him 2000 540i/6.
While driving the car breaks up/falls on it's face at around 4.5k rpm
The car has a bit of rough idle, when cold and stopped. But it really isn't too bad.
Heres what I got in total:
(113) 71 Camshaft Position Sensor, bank 1, signal
(114) 72 Camshaft Position Sensor, bank 2, signal
(164) A4 signal, ambient pressure sensor
(026)1A Mixture adaption, bank 1, multiplicative control limit reached
(027)1B Mixture adaption, bank 2, multiplicative control limit reached
I've also noticed a bit of oil around the cam sensor, so planning on replacing the sensor, but want to hear suggestions to diagnose.
CPS signal problems (as opposed to something about position error) generally mean electrical or part failure. Unusual to have both fail at same time unless the previous owner dude unplugged them or got the plugs mixed up with something else somehow. In INPA you should be able to see cam position for each bank and if not then there's some major issue there.
4500rpm is when the engine expects the VANOS to return to full retard (it advances in the mid-band...) so the stumble up there very well could be related to that... If it doesn't have CPS it won't operate the VANOS advance, and therefore the characteristics of the motor across the RPM range won't be what the fuel and ignition are tuned for... but...
Trims are maxed out. Probably he's got a giant ass vacuum leak. Just like always. Yawn. Need to hunt it down and fix it. Loads of things it could be... gaskets, vac hoses / lines, 'sucking jet pump' to the brake booster, CCV, yadda yadda. No doubt thats the source of the idle problem.
BTW do all those codes come back reliably after being cleared?

Thanks, appreciate your response. Looks like we'll vacuum test soon. All the codes come back after about five minutes of driving.
