Hi everyone,
I am hoping someone would be able to advise me on this:
I have an E38 european model and its a 1999, 750IL. Some months ago, I started hearing some whining noise coming from the gearbox and you would need to push it hard to get the gearbox change in gears. All the gears were working fine however. A new oil and filter was changed from BMW. The whining went down for certain BUT the hard shifting remained. I decided to not drive the car any further as I did not want to cause any further damage just to be on the safe side. When I had some time, I plugged in the INPA and it gave me this diagnosis "Torque Converter is slipping too much". I thought maybe then it is the TC which was on its way. I decided to buy a second hand TC with 110000.
I have taken the car to a garage to replace the TC and have been told that they replaced with the second hand unit which came from similar gearbox ie 5HP30. Oil drained and same amount of oil was put back.
The issue we have now is that the car would not move from the ramps. It is not engaging in any gears now. It is not moving forward or reversing. Mechanic tried to read the computer but nothing was found.
I know he told me that when he drained the oil, he only drained about 8litres which i think is the exact amount he put back in.
Does anyone know how much oil is needed in total when replacing a torque converter? I would appreciate any help. I just don't understand why the car wouldn't move at all.
Thank you for your help. I love this car and never had much of any issues with it before.
the fluid could be low, you need to follow the right fluid fill procedure in order to get the right amount of fluid in the transmission.
Thanks @ tjpike....I am inclined to think the same as well. We will drain again and start the process from scratch...
Is there anything else I need to be aware of other than low fluid?
From another post in this forum - 13.1 liters when you include the Torque converter - sounds like you are short 5 liters
