First post here, so I hope I'm in the right spot etc.
I've just bought a 1990 325i Convertible, and the steering has a little play in it, particularly at cruising speed. My local garage didn't seem to think it was a problem, but where would I start with investigating this, or do I just accept it as an age factor? Thanks
No, it should still be tight. Have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you look at things moving. It should all move together, not one part move and then the part its attached to move a second later. There shouldn't be slack or play
No e30s again.
Pop the hood, open your driver's window, and from the outside turn the steering wheel, while staring at the steering shaft. Specifically watch the coupler giubo, if you see half the shaft turning, but not the other half, there is your play.
Ultimately, play in my steering required me to change almost all components. Tie rods had play, the rack itself had play, and the steering coupler had play.
