Alec, it was great meeting you too. Thank you for your advice on how to better record the exhaust sound. I am sure we will meet again some time.
I had a bit of immature fun flooring it through a tunnel in Phoenix. That sound is exactly what I wanted.
2,600 km roadtrip done. The E31 is the perfect car for these trips. Effortless passing and the engine braking is brutal.
Thank you laying down the groundwork for this upgrade. Who ever said that M70 will never sound like a raspy exotic v12 is wrong. Mufflers were not cheap and needed to be modded to fit properly and not upside down. Tips had to be cut off and switched 360°.
However this mod was all well worth it, I was blown away by the sound! When I floor it going 60mph, after 3k rpm it is symphony! No drone at all during normal cruising.
I did not opt for long Y pipe, just a standard X pipe.

Dragon850, you did the exhaust mod...?!!! That's awesome!
Yes indeed! And here is the result, video doesn't do it justice, but you can hear my excitement!

Wow that sounds amazing! Just on idle it sounds like a Ferrari...did you use the same mufflers as the OP?

Just listened to that on a pair of headphones - that is a GREAT sound - it sounds like it is doubling the exhaust frequency, probably sound pretty good on the V8 as well even though it is cross-plane.....

Alway great to see something different.
The sound is amazing, but I am sure it is even better in person.
It's really cool that you took this idea and ran with it! I'm very happy to see it done, and that you liked the sound.
You went through the work of getting the exhaust tips pointed the correct way. Mine are upside down, I can really only tell when I'm cleaning them. The sound isn't coming out upside down so I'm not too bothered.
I see your M70 is supercharged. It was wise you didn't go for the single center pipe and went with an X-pipe instead because you do need to displace a lot more air than a stock M73.
Enjoy your wailing V12 like I'm enjoying mine!
My lord this sounds insane! I was looking up 850 exhaust videos last night on YouTube and found yours randomly. Most of the others were bland or not refined. Yours sounds the way this car should have always sounded. Unbelievable! You have done the community a great service by investigating and experimenting with this! Just this sound has re-invigorated my search for an 850. That is a sound I want to hear till I am old and gray. Thank you for your work!
Fantastic I'd do this in a heartbeat
¡Y hecho en México, caray! Bueno, al menos diseñado en México…jeje. Excelente trabajo camarada. Te felicito.

I am in negotiation for the purchase of a Ferrari 599 GTB mufflers. I am in doubt about the modifications needed for them to serve on e31. I'm not sure what changes Dragon850 member made to install it. Dear Dragon, help me.
I understand now. After a few hundred miles what do you tell me about the adaptation? You did some car video on the road. Share with us.
Will this work on my Tesla?
TiA!
Mostly, it will definitely have a different sound and will improve your mileage.
Equal length headers should align the exhaust pulses so that they stack up into a harmonic sequence, much like the exhaust by Sasaki. More of a higher pitched Formula 1 sound. But a possible side effect could be losing the chord. We won't know for sure until someone tries it.
There is a set of Tubi 599 mufflers on ebay, in theory they should fit the 850 too. They'll be louder than the OEM 599 mufflers though.

Would those Tubi make the V12 sound also more exotic?
I think they would, Tubi Style and Capristo systems are usually what the Ferrari guys go for when replacing OEM. But they are louder. If I wasn't already very happy with my current setup I'd go for that Tubi.
How is your exhaust coming along? If you have any questions or need more detailed photos just let me know.
