Adjusting DSP settings
Most second and third+ owners have no owner’s manuals, much less the Radio and Information Systems Manual. It describes the 7-band graphic equalizer inside the system.
Owners who are dissatisfied with their sound system may wish to try this stopgap solution. I have used it to tune the sound to the point where I have no compelling reason to modify the system. While it won’t transform it into a $2000 system, it’s worth a try.
Access the equalizer thus: Radio on, press DSP/Set/Equalizer. This display also gives access to Echo and Room settings. Tune to your desired settings, testing by exiting to Audio. Don’t forget to max out the Bass and Treble controls, accessed separately when in Audio mode.
When finished, press Audio to exit.

My experience is that the Echo/Room settings should be set near zero to not sound ridiculously ass-y. You can maybe get away with the lightest room settings but the Echo (and the bigger room settings which turn up the echo) itself at anything but nearly-off is awful. The EQ is indeed useful.

Agreed. It's mostly a gimmick.
