My e46 M54 engine has a whining noise that goes with the pedal. Based on my research on the net, some mentioned that the cause might be the idler/guide pulley and or tensioner pulleys. So when I checked youtube and Bentley manual the location of the pulleys, I found out that I don't have idler pulley. I am not sure if the previous owner removed this or it comes as standard. My car is running fine apart from the whining noise. So do I need to put back the idler pulley or leave as it is? Any help will be much appreciated.
Are you sure it's not there? I can't imagine the belt stays on or the waterpump and alternator are driven without that pulley...
Google 'M54 accessory belt' to see an image of where the pulleys are.
Use the last seven of the VIN in www.realoem.com and review the various diagrams and related parts lists for the exact list of your cars parts.
Some E36 M52s also we’re not fit with an idler pulley, just the tensioner and a shorter belt.
Perhaps yours is similar.

yes, they came both ways, I think if I remember correctly. don't recall which ones did not come with the idler though but it used to piss off the parts guys when we ordered parts.
