so even if i got an adapter from round 20 pin to flat 16 pin, my obd2 scanner wont work?

i tried an adapter bough from ebay and it didnt work, but im not sure if it is just because its cheap and the adapter doesnt work or if it is that the port isnt obd2 compliant

also if it isnt obd2 compliant what is it used for and is there a scanner that does work on it?

BMW 1996 onward were OBD2 compliant. For the early E39 there should be a cover at the left knee trim panel that you have to remove with a flat screwdriver or coin, under this cover is the OBD2 port.

Just use INPA with a laptop and the round adapter.

i just bought a cable to do that, hope it works. i did buy a second scanner that works though its a foxwell nt510 i think. i dont know why 1 works and the other doesnt i use the exact same cable and the same obd-port. maybe the foxwell has a special proram in it since i need to click bmw and not obd to scan it. i also checked the pins in my 20-pin obd port and it doesnt have a 15-pin so its not ADS. again my fingers are crossed for the new cable since i need to program some stuff

The 520i with MS41 ecu is K-line, so it will still read with OBD tools (and adapter), but some other modules (like ABS or instrument cluster) would need ADS.
