seems like my car is burning oil after a oil change. I really dont see any oil leaking just smoke coming from the engine sometimes. do any one know some of the things that may cause these problems?
CCV may need replacing, but keep in mind that the M54 engine consumes oil in any case.
I concur with Raddee. The temperatures are getting low in the DC area and cold weather aggravates a poorly functioning crankcase ventilation system (CCV). Changing the CCV is a pain in the butt job unless you’ve done it before. Find a reputable indie shop that specializes in bimmers at www.bimrs.org. I used to use J&F Motors in Shirlington (South Arlington) for major work on my bimmers. The shop has a great reputation and does quality work.
I've been told to test the CCV you can pull the dipstick while the engine is idling. You should notice a small difference in how the engine runs and sounds with the dipstick out and in. If there is no difference, your CCV is bad.
I would verify how much your actually using fill it write down mileage and date then when you need it again you have a reference point, check the ccv, also you could try lubimoly engine flush.
You can do a rudimentary CCV check by removing the oil fill cap while the engine is running. There should be a slight vacuum.
Lets say there is a slight vacuum at the cap. That likely means that the CCV is working. So I have to ask:
- how many miles on the engine?
- how many miles since the oil and filter were changed?
- what brand and weight of oil was put in the engine?
- were 8 quarts of oil put in the engine (“x” engines take 8 quarts)?
- are you taking a lot of short trips (less than 10 miles)?
- how is the car driven?
- have you scanned the engine computer (DME) for codes?
Have you used any engine flush cleaners? These can cause old sediment to loosen and clog the oil ring on the piston forcing oil through the exhaust.
What weight ans type of oil are you using? You might post the miles on the car. Has the car had maintenance like the CCV, ccv hoses, vac hose replacement, oil seals/dip stick housing cleaned out and replaced, oil cap seal replaced? Sometimes it's hard to see around that engine. The xi's are pretty tight in there. I know, we have a 330xi. You might get the car up on the ramps and remove the belly pans to look for leaks. Oil pan gaskets are a pretty common leak issue on these cars. I have to do ours next year.
Regards
I feel oil consumption on the M54 is very engine dependent. Growing up my fathers E46 330xi would eat quite a bit of oil. Mine doesn't eat virtually any. I did my oil change 3 months ago and have put 5k miles (100 miles a day) on it since my oil change and even with a seeping oil pan my oil level is just a hair overfilled like I had it. When I did my oil change I put in 8 quarts (xi) and it was a quart overfilled so I popped the plug and drained a quart out and the level is now back in spec. (Mobil1 5w30) I also get bad gas mileage for 98% highway at 24mpg (fresh plugs and no codes) but that's also probably from me being liberal with the gas.
