I would recommend a full EDIABAS package (INPA, NCS, etc) on a laptop.
Most of the handheld systems probably won’t meet the needs, maybe a schwaben/foxwell... maybe.
It also really depends on your engine: M62TU safest to go with EDIABAS; M73N no if ands or buts, go with proper EDIABAS setup.

As above, INPA is the best for this car, you might like PA Soft "BMW Scanner" as well.
If you dont want to deal with a notebook I'd suggest iCarsoft i910

What brand do you use? Looks like there are many many options out there

I have a Schwaben handheld that was useful on my e39. It is functional on the e38 but as I have the ADS requirement (750iL) the only was I can interact (aka see live engine data) is with EDIABAS- I use DIS for now as I am working on my German and until I am comfortable with it limited INPA use here.

Like I said before.. bimmerstuff.com/diag-tools/ its basically a two in one. Codes & programming. I didn't have to scour the net for drivers, software with viruses. Got it here, simple. Done. Cheap
