This morning I noticed that I can push the shifter like butter to the left while its in neutral, but when trying to push it to the right is feels rough as if its rubbing or catching on something. I have to apply much more pressure for it to go to the right from the center point. This is the low mileage E36 M3, it wasn't doing it a couple days ago.
Thoughts?

What fluid are you running and how old is it? If you still have a positive ‘neutral’ position, then change the fluid to Red Line D4-ATF or MTL, or a mix of both, as a first step.

Car only has 15k miles so I can assume none of the fluids have been changed since 1999. I will do all the fluids to refresh, any other suggestions to get done to bring it up to speed while it’s at the shop?

Correct. The shift detent pins and springs create that tension. If I'm not mistaken 5th and Reverse are the same detent and spring.
