Had a day to kill in MUC so went to the museum/Welt. Lots of cool cars both old and new, but not a trace of an e31 in the lot. Not even a mention of the model in the exhibit read-alongs hanging on the walls.
Closest they came was an M60b30 engine, which was used in the 830 prototype (and lots of e34’s). Not a single M60/62 M70-73 production engine to be found in the dozens of engines on display.
We all know the e31 was the bastard stepchild, but now it seems it’s become their dirty little secret. It’s a shame. FWIW the new 8 is not all that head-turning, other than the price.

That is really odd , as the E31 was a great car ... something they could be, and should still be , proud of ... I wonder why ?
To the OP, I know what you mean, I was just at the Welt/Museum back in August and while I enjoyed the exhibits, I left feeling quite deflated to not see anything E31 related.
I also visited the Welt and Museum last May. Having visited the MB and Porsche museums in Stuttgart a few years earlier, I was looking forward to this visit. I felt the Welt was essentially just a large dealership with a few cars on the showroom floor! Museum was pretty poorly laid out, and the BMW 'history' of some great cars was also poorly done. The MB museum was fabulous by comparison, and the Porsche museum much better as well.
Just my opinion.

By the way, the opinions above (including mine) are duplicated on the e9 Forum (2800 and 3.0 CS models from '70-75)

Either they rotated their displays or you may have skipped a somewhat hidden room:

If you would have gone in 2014, you could have seen over 150 E31's of all flavors plus the few they had on display. To say it was awe inspiring would be an understatement.

...the price of cool ain't cheap!
I remember those pics you put up Olin, a huge motivator to go see for myself. We asked around and the standard answer I got was that they change exhibits frequently, and no one ever knows what they do with the old ones. Even spoke to the head museum MFWIC on duty -- he basically said the same thing. Wish I'd had your secret handshake to open the hidden room ;-)
Apparently spending a fortune on new BMW's - and even more fortunes on genuine BMW parts - over the years means squat. I just really wanted to see that Cabriolet...the M8 woulda been a bonus.
