Hi guys,
So I just bought a 2000 740i with 42k miles on it. Drove it from Virginia to Florida, absolutely no problems.
Got up this morning to go to work, car started up just fine, pulled out of my driveway and the car chimed that the parking brake
was still engaged. So I pulled the brake handle again and pulled up in front of the house and shut the car off. Noticed that the brake
pedal had not fully come up so reached down brought it up, parking brake light went out so went to start the car again ....nothing.
I car hear a single click from the starter when putting the key into position 3.
Here is what I tried and noticed,
1. Both of my keys work. I can lock/unlock, and open the trunk
2. The shift indicator is lit in the cluster, and moves appropriately when I change gears
3. Same behavior when trying to start in neutral
4. Put the car in neutral and moved it back and forth a few feet, nothing changed
5. Tried jumping the car with my truck, nothing
I plan on pulling the battery and letting it charge overnight.
Does anyone have some other suggestions for things I can try. The car is in immaculate shape, and on my 900 mile drive home everything
was great.
Thanks
That behavior is quite often the starter itself - but check the battery voltage first - anything below 12V indicates there is insufficient charge. If the battery is OK then you might find the next time you turn the key the car will start, starter motors can be like that!

Thanks Timm,
I have never run into a single issue with my 01 e39 starter. I assumed that the starter would be the same for both car since they have the same engine.
Are the starters in the 7 series very temperamental?
Anything is when it gets this old!
