How much does the clutch master cylinder compress?

    Hi folks,
Trying to track down a weird shifting issue (thud from the drivetrain when putting the car into gear with the clutch depressed).
How much is the clutch pedal supposed to compress the master cylinder?
With the stopper removed, this is how much my master cylinder is compressed when the pedal is to the floor. Should it compress the rest of the way until the plastic eyelet nearly touches, or is this normal?
    Thanks!

I had a similar experience, if you haven't replaced the clutch line, that would be a good place to start troubleshooting. My problem went away once i replaced the line to a stainless steel braided line.

I replaced all of the clutch hydraulics, master, slave, both lines, as part of earlier maintenance.
    Thanks though!

    OE rubber line?

A ‘thunk’ I had that sounded to be in the rear turned out to be a partially torn Giubo.

    Bimmerworld stainless line.
The guibo looks pretty good, I think the PO replaced it.
I wonder if it could just be lash in the driveshaft and axles?

For what it's worth, I got a picture of an S54 car that shows the same amount of compression on the clutch master.
