Lightbulb Your BMW Could Be Recalled Due To A Fire Risk

BMW recently announced that it is recalling 1.6 million diesel vehicles worldwide because of potential fluid leaks that could cause fires. The automaker said that in some diesel vehicles, the coolant glycol could leak out of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler, which is part of the emissions reduction system. When combined with typical deposits … Continue reading Your BMW Could Be Recalled Due To A Fire Risk →

My 2014 328d has 106K miles and the EGR cooler has failed. I smelled diesel exhaust in the cabin and a tear-down revealed the cooler flex pipe had burned through. Parts are backlogged from here to eternity. BMW national headquarters has no idea when parts will be available, the dealers are at a total loss. The car can't be driven without risking further failure including a possible engine fire. I bought a diesel Passat this week so I have something to drive to work while the F30 sits in the driveway. I expect it will be months to produce 1.6 million parts.

The local dealer wouldn't make an appointment over the phone "because the recall won't be officially announced until December 17." I rolled down two windows to allow breathing, drove to the dealership (BMW Southpoint), and made an appointment for December 17. The car is not drive-able because of the level of exhaust incursion into the cabin. The dealer can't perform the recall work, but didn't offer a loaner, didn't mention not driving to avoid an intake manifold fire, and wasn't sure if parts will be in stock by the 17th. BMW USA, you people need to step up on this one and encourage your dealers to do the same. This has become a case study in how to alienate customers.

This is a followup to this post - I called today to confirm that the dealer had parts for my appointment and found that they can cancelled my service appointment without telling me. Their technical service bulletin says in big, red letters "NO REPAIR POSSIBLE AT THIS TIME" presumably because of no parts.

I just bought a used EGR and cooler from UK on ebay so I can get the car back on the road and sell it.

Apparently the moderator doesn't want any further posts on this topic, even though 1.6 million BMW customers are affected.

The forum software automatically puts into a review queue edited posts of new members whom have had minimal activity. A moderator reviews and releases all valid posts. This is to curb the nonsense and spam posts we see.
