good evening forum, I have not started a new thread before, however I could sure use some insight. 2000 e38 no crank no start. bought 1 1/2 yrs ago, services transmission, replaced several relays in trunk, ecu box under the hood and rebuilt the fuse panel under driver seat. I also had the key resynced to ews with new transponder. The car was running fine until couple day ago when I was at the store, came out and never started up for me. No crank. I rechecked all my relays and fuses, checked battery voltage, checked voltage from battery to fuse panel in trunk, checked voltage from fuse panel under passenger seat, all good. I'm stumped here. Any help would be appreciated, as I feel I have covered all my bases here.
Crank sensor?? Maybe?
If the engine doesn't turn over (rotate) when trying to start then the first on the list would be the starter motor - these can be affected by heat. Sometimes, when cooled down, they will start working again.

it didnt throw any codes
Did the engine rotate when cranking? Neither the starter motor or CRANKshaft sensor will throw a code....

i can check crankshaft sensor tomorrow and update, however if there is no code, how can i tell if its bad?
It's not the crankshaft sensor - it still cranks with a failed one - so, starter motor top of the list...

ok, so starter is possible culprit. will look into it and provide feedback.
Thanks Timm
if it were in fact the starter, would I hear a click when I turn the key?? Cause I don't hear any clicking.
I have exactly the same car and I'm going through the same issue. Nothing happens when I turn the key. So far I've replaced the ignition switch and got a new key (realized that the small EWS chip got lost on the old and only one). I'm about to check the group of fuses inside the E-box and after that the fuse block under the passenger seat area carpet. F114 feeds the EWS system AND the starter!

I cant even see where the terminals are on the starter to try and bridge them...there has to be a something I'm overlooking here.
I have the same issue too on a 750iL. Did think it might be the transponder in the key getting out of sync with the ews but had that checked and fine. Mine is looking like a starter issue so thats coming out next week. I’ve got a new aftermarket on standby ( no new or remanufactured Bosch starters available in UK). if the one off the car can’t be fixed (only done 48k miles). Will let you know how it goes.
does the starter click when you attempt to start it? If i got some kind of sound I would say it may be the starter, but i hear nothing. this is driving me insane!!
I believe I have narrowed to issue to the ignition switch, I removed the steering covers to expose the switch, put a trester to it and found that the yellow/black wire produced 8V during cranking process. All other connectors produced 12V.
Is heat a factor in causing your non start? With my 750 the car will start perfectly when cold but not when hot, although it will occasionally if I’m persistent. Some clicking from a relay can often be heard, but rarely from the starter motor itself. Should know by Wednesday whether its the starter.
Okay guys, just an update here on the the no crank no start issue. I narrowed it down to the ignition switch since every other trouble shoot was negative. I received the switch last night and put it in this morning, voila!! she fired right up. the question now is, why would a switch fail and thus render the car crippled?I have watched some videos and read on forums about symptoms of the switch, and aside from the funky things with sun visor and accessories not working (which by the way my car didnt show), none had the car not start. this is another example of the sensitivity of the electrical components in these cars, of which will leave you stranded. This one touch start mechanism i feel is the culprit, as the car will remain in crank mode until it starts, a faulty fuel pump relay (as in my case some months ago) can cause the car to remain in crank mode forcing me at times to turn the switch off. this over time possibly caused some arcing within the switch contacts itself.
The ignition switch is four multi-throw switches in one package, but it is usually the section that signals the accessories to switch ON that fails because there is no current passed through it and it doesn't self-clean (as it would do if passed any significant current). However, after 18 years anything can fail and we are seeing stranger problems these days....

For me a new starter has so far cured the no start/no crank issue on my 750 when hot. Not had enough time yet to be fully confident but fingers crossed
hey guys, im back experiencing the similar issue. after replacing the ignition switch, the car would start up fine, drove it around fine. parked it for about a week or so then went back out to run some errands and no crank....WTH. checked battery, even charged it, no dice. any ideas will be really appreciated at this point.
It's still the starter motor.....

Okay Tim,Ill pull that out and run a test. At this point Ill try anything
can someone help me out here to verify? I was finally able to jack up the car and crawl up under there. With the ignition in the on to start position, i bridged the solenoid and the starter turned over, car did not start, but it turned over. so is my problem still the starter or the ignition switch, which was recently replaced?
Could be the EWS system. I had a no start condition (not even cranking) and had an error from INPA stating "ERROR ECU Rejected". A board member helped me by reading my old EWS and copying to another used one and programming the keys!
