    Newly acquired e38 inquiry

    Hi fellas, I’ve been out of the bmw scene for good 5 years or so. Sold my e34 540.

    Now, a buddy of mine gave me his 01 740i so I’m back in. It’s got 200k on the clock.

    My question is: what are the weak points on the m60b44? What should I address first, besides the basics? Also, how much boost are y’all running on stock internals with cometic headgasket and arp studs 😁 I joke..

    Thanks

    PS can I bleed the brakes myself or does a shop need to do it so they can cycle the abs unit? What’s a good price for having the system flushed and bled? Thanks

    Of all the BMW V8's the M60 is the most robust and has fewest problems - but it still suffers from the usual stuff such as vacuum leaks and the crankcase ventilation system - and, of course, the cooling system! More info here:

    So that means timing chain guides (just did them in mine!).

    You guys obviously donÂ’t know what youÂ’re talking about!!! 😂😋

    Yea, thatÂ’s right, m62tu. Does tu stand for vanos?

    Thanks for the heads up. Guess IÂ’ll order some guides today. Anything else if I go digging in there?

    TU = Technical Update
    Yes, you are a lucky guy with having two VANOS units, probably in need of a rebuild soon
    Plus 2x VANOS solenoids but those are probably lasting longer.

    Really appreciate all the information and comments in this thread. I just purchased an 1998 740iL with 47k miles and am going through the car slowly. All the data, the thorough documentation of troubles and fixes is making working on the car a lot of fun. Thanks!

    I just got my hands on a 1998 740il with 102xxx on the clock. After 600 miles, it's spoiled me for anything else. I'm going to have it inspected by an Indy mechanic to see what bits I should be replacing first. Hopefully it's not too extensive... I'd like to get to replacing the injectors and adding a CAI, mapping, etc. Has anyone put headers and catbacks on? Any recommendations?

    I also have some 21" F02/F01 7 series BMW oem 312 wheels for sale with pirelli zero runflats on them for sale/trade. Really nice wheels, tires almost new. Just not the style I'm looking for. More interested in 18" wheels with more sidewall. And just big enough for me to upgrade to bigger brakes.
