So I currently have a 98 e36 M3 sedan and im having an issue with the “brake light circuit failure” message. Im blowing fuse 46 which is linked to my brake lights and gauge cluster for my fuel level and oil temp. My trouble shooting so far:
-I’ve replaced my brake light switch twice.
-I have opened the glove box and panels under the steering column looking for frayed wires or wires making a ground but have not found any.
-Same with the trunk I have investigated the whole trunk for frayed wires and nothing seems worrying at all.
-I’ve disconnected the tail light assembly’s and the fuse still blows when I press the brakes.
-I’ve gotten it to work for a few minutes when I unplugged all the control modules and plugged them all back in. But after tinkering with a loose bulb on my tail light (the brake light bulb) the fuse blew again.
-So I think it’s my tail light assembly that is malfunctioning (they are after market). But I am confused as to why the fuse is still blowing when I disconnect the tail lights.
-Or could this be a control module issue
Any help would be great i need these fixed.
Thank you.
Does your m3 have a spoiler with a 3rd brake light? If so, you may have an issue with the wiring loom that goes from the body into the trunk lid on the driver's side.
No spoiler, I’ve checked the wiring to the light behind the back windshield and nothing is damaged.
