    Can't connect OBD computer

I bought a Veepeak wifi OBD II diagnostic tool and a 20 pin adapter to fit on the diagnostic port on my E32. I get a connection on ELM connection but nothing on ECU connection after it takes 25 minutes to decide so. Any ideas on what could be wrong here?

Earlier cars did not use OBD but a system called ADS. Unless your diagnostic tool can switch to that system, it is not going to work

What would be the best code reader for my 1990 735I? My buddy used to have the real yellow head GT-1 with the IBM laptop. He still has the laptop with the DIS I think on it, but the yellow head blew up. I'm wondering if there is something I can buy to read any fault codes. I already have a devise to reset oil and service lights. I had it when I had my E23, and the extender makes it perfect for the E32. I know I can do a stomp test, but maybe not too much money for a decent fault code reader would be nice to have. Thanks
    Jeff

My car has a manufacture date of 12/89 and it's of course an M30

That depends on what you want to do with it. My buddy has a GT-1 Tester, but in daily use it takes too much time to set it up, plus a laptop etc., we very seldom use it.
For easy and simple, but limited testing I have a Peake tool. Small, easy to plug in and just push a button, you get a code on the display and have to check in the manual what the code means. And it fits into the glovebox.
The Peake is however limited to engine related faults such as emission, nothing for central chassis electronics like the GT-1 tester. With the GT-1 tester we played a bit and for example I could test the wiper pressure system and the locks etc, all the functions which are in the GM.
The next problem is that your 1990 735 with the Bosch end no. 178/9 DME M1.3 is also limited with storing faults.
For example the M60 has a newer DME system and there are much more possibilities. For the DME M1.3 with the Peake for your model year you can get max. these faults
    DME control unit self test
    electrical fuel pump relay
    idle speed actuator open
    evap purge control valve
    airflowmeter
    emission/lambda control
    check engine lamp
    fuel injectors cyl 1,3,5
    fuel injectors cyl 2,4,6
    oxy sensor heating relay
    oxy sensor
    vehicle speed signal not present
AT kick down prevent solenoid valve
    control unit supply
    automatic stability control/DWA
    A/C compressor
    idle CO potentiometer
    intake air temperature sensor
    coolant temperature sensor
    engine drag torque control (MSR)
    ignition timing intervention
    idle switch
    full load switch
    torque converter clutch
    unspecified DME output stage

then you can reset the faults, reset service interval, reset oil change interval (not airbag light warning, for that you need a different tool and there Peake has nothing for the E32)
To quote Peake Research's website "R5/SRS: 1994-2000* R5/SRS-16: 2001-2002. Our SRS/Airbag tool compatibility falls off sharply around mid 2002. Flagship BMWs, such as the 7 series, are the least likely to be compatible."

Wow, quite a bit to read there. I'll read fully in the A.M. Also I see their web site. I'll let you know what I'm doing. Sounds. interesting. Have you ever seen a green color fault code reader, that has the correct connector for my car, and it sort of looks like a Multi-Meter only heavier. I remember seeing one like that over the years, but forget who makes it. Might be a lot more money.

And what program would I be running the ADS with?

Would I be looking for something like this?
