    Recurring Diesel Emissions System Problems

Hi, I have a 2009 X5 35d that has had recurring issues with emissions system (EGR/SCR parts) ever since BMW started recalling parts in 2014. Parts are repeatedly failing at great expense to me. BMW Canada has assisted a few times with repair cost, but mostly just insists that "the car is out of warranty, sorry". The entire emissions system is warranteed in the US for 10 years, but unfortunately this is not the case in Canada (although they have recently extended the warranty on just the SCR Active Tank to 10 years). BMW knows this is a problem but not doing enough to help - the entire system should be warranteed in Canada as well.

My question is: has anyone else had repeated failures (of both replaced and also new/related parts in the diesel emissions system)? I am not sure whether my car is an exception or the norm - but either way it's unacceptable. I am interested to know if others have had these same recurring problems so that I may use that knowledge when I deal with BMW and MOT; also, if anyone knows if they have fixed the problems in more recent diesel models.

As I intend to drive this vehicle for at least a few more years, I feel like the better route to take is to go through BMW itself (and Ministry of Transportation, possibly), rather than taking it to a mechanic and "deleting" the systems.

    Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Hence the reason I try and steer people away from the diesels, unless they are in a position where they can delete the troublesome emissions equipment. It's nothing but a pain in the ass, even with some parts having the extended warranty.

Those early emission systems are nothing but a pain, they were a bit of a trial and error run by the manufacturers. The new ones are far superior but can still be troublesome. Hate to say it, but delete and move on or deal with it. My wife has an E70 X5d, great car, but it just had a ton of work done under warranty and it was all exhaust related.

So if one "deletes", is it possible to pass an emissions test afterwards? Does it damage the car in any way? Thanks.

Does not damage the car in any way. It will probably prolong the life of the engine.

However, you will not be able to pass an emissions test. Your exhaust will smell like an old dump truck, and you will see some black smoke when you hammer down on the throttle. For some people, that doesn't bother them. You will also have more power, more torque, and possibly better fuel economy.

I won't be able to license the car here without passing an emissions test. Back to the drawing board!

Check your vin to see if the warranty is still attached to it also is was reading the bulletin yesterday for a customer and the way it reads is if you are still under the extended warranty period the scr tank would still be covered even if it had already been replaced call BMW of canada

Warranty in Canada is not the same as the US - it is 10 years in US but regular here (with exception of SCR active tank, which has been extended to 10 years. Unfortunately there is nothing wrong with my SCR tank at the moment.

Did you get your car repaired under warranty or did you find another way to get around the omissions? Thanks, Jim in TN
