I have a 2011 BMW 328 xdrive with a GM 6AL45 (I think).
I recall someone posting that this one uses the cheap type of fluid, but I can find the post and I can't find the spec. Pelican does not show a diference between this and my 335d, which is the German trans. I think that is wrong, but i'm not positive.
What fluid does this one use? I'm ready to change the fluid.
If you're sure it's a GM trans, then you would use any Dexron 6 rated fluid. Generally, GM trans will have a metal pan, ZF plastic.

This is very true....I used Castrol Dexron 6.
the change is challenging, but doable. filter and fluid change on level ground (level trans. pan) transmission up to temperature.
step one: be sure the fill plug will come out before draining!.....
then drain the tranny fluid. change filter, new gasket......refill until fluid comes out. leave jacked up. start car, climb back under car while running....thats right!...while running, and continue to fill tranny until fluid just starts to weep out of fill hole. Shift through gears, get tranny up to temp, check fluid again....add if necessary. (6 quarts?......may be more if you let it drain over night....8 quarts, then, I think)
Its a dicey prospect being under a running car up on jack stands.....You could use ramps, I suppose. just be sure its level. parking brake on!
Common sense must rule here....I only suggest jack stands or ramps...but you must decide what is safe.....
