I have a 1997 BMW Z3 that has one headlamp bulb out and both angel halos. How straight forward is replacing the halos and do they need to BMW certified or something to not get the error message I'm reading about. Recommendations on where to get them also appreciated.
Your Z3 did not came with angel eyes so somebody a. Added rings only to your otherwise stock headlight housings or b. Replaced entire housings with aftermarket units. Depending on which option took place in your Z3, the replacement will be different. Add on rings - you cannot replace the "bulb", you need to replace entire ring. In aftermarket housings - depends on how they are built, but in most cases you are looking at replacing entire ring as well. As a first step, I would make sure that the side that doesn't work has 12V going to it.

The side has power, at least as I understand it, there is power to the high beam, it is only the low beam and the halo rings that are not working. There doesn't seem to be a clear way to get access to the halo rings, nothing through the back and the lens does not appear to come off easily.
ive seen some aftermarket halo rings that can added. have you considered going that route?
