realoem.com has it listed as 27mm. I can't fit a 30mm over it, and 36mm just seems a bit loose.
#6 below (also- I have no # 7 in my car)

I've done a couple dozen of these and always used 36mm. Acceptable tolerance of a hexagonal fastener fit increases considerably with increasing fastener size. A 1/4" (6.35mm) will slip on a 6mm, a 1/2" (12.7mm) is somewhat usable on a 12mm, and I think I once got away with a 1.5" (38.1mm) on a 36.
What's the statute of limitations on the events that resulted in this damage?
I'll try the 36mm socket again.
...not sure on statute of limitations....but damage was done with a 'minor' clutch drop from trying to teach a 15 year old how to drive manual. (pic is with my M42 tow rig )

Yikes! I'll bet the bolts were loose.
36mm, some of the brutish cheapie sockets won't fit into the recess. #7 is clearly visible in your pic

What is the diameter of your drive flange on the outboard, I'm doing a swap 540 drive train to a 530 and I need to swap the outboard drive flanges.
I've already swapped the 540 motor, trans, drive shaft and diff from my totalled 540 to a clean 530 e34.
But I screwed up and got rid of the chassis not knowing I needed the half shafts and outboard drive flange item #5.
If you could tell me your diameter that would help, I have a guy that has a set of flanges but I need to verify the diameter is proper before I dump any more money into this project.
You can email me at rtswapp@comcast.net.
Thanks,

Yeah, as the bolts were stretched (and not a clean snap) I think they may have wiggled loose prior to snapping...lots of loctite on the replacements. You are right on #7 being there - it had me confused, as on the diagram #7 looks inboard of #6, not sure why it's displayed that way.
