    Rear subframe mounts botched install

I replaced the rear subframe mounts on my E34 but screwed up and used oil in place of soap and water when reinstalling the mounts. As a result, the subframe has shifted upwards roughly 1/4 of an inch on the mounts towards the body.

No clunks and the car seems to drive fine. Is this a major safety issue or not a large deal?

The bracket that bolts into bottom of bushing, did you torque it down while car was on ground or in air? You supposed to tighten it when cars on ground apparently. Possibly if you retighten it could push bushing up?

Bushing is tight against the body. I torqued it with it in the air to 110ft lbs, but as soon as there is any weight on the subframe it works it’s way up.

I’ll probably drive it for a bit and see if it clunks around; I just don’t want the subframe to damage the unibody.

I think the easiest way to fix this would be to get the sub frame back down drill a hole or two in the sub frame and screw it to the bushings metal sleeve.

I would remove the mounts (they don't look very attached to their positions; should be easy), clean them up as best as I could with soap and water, to remove as much oil contamination as possible, maybe even soak them in soap, and reinstall. They see considerable vertical force and I don't expect screws to last.
