E83 3.0si Sport Package - New Tire & Wheel Choices

I need to put some new tires on the wife's X3. I've narrowed it down to 3 choices.
    19x9 style 191 wheels ET51 with 255/40/19 (OEM e83)
    18x8.5 style 69 wheels ET48 with 255/45/18 (OEM e53)
    17x8.5 style 39 (DS2) ET41 with 255/50/17 (OEM e36)

I want to have the same size tires and wheels on all 4 corners instead of the staggered set that are on it now.
I will go with a name brand UHP All-Season tire.
I already have all the wheels bc I'm a wheel hoarder.
I also have several different sizes of various wheel spacers and longer lug studs if needed, but shouldn't be necessary. But that's not the point of this thread.

What would the bimmerforum community do?

17, 18, and 19's. Sounds like you need to pick as there's a big difference in ride, handling and road feel.

this e83 driver will stick with the OE 17 inch wheels .... I like that old school feeling of having some tire rubber wrapped around the wheel ... not just a skinny elastic band like used on the 19 inch wheels
... forty-three years of driving before I get behind the wheel of a BMW .... and I am thinking, "why did it take me so long?"
... and then after another 4 years I can't believe that I have two of them !!

Do you think DS2s would look ok on the e83? I will run to my shop this weekend and do a test fit. I want more sidewall than what the 19" offer I think.

I think it is up to personal style and taste.... technical details include:
    - I would want to make sure that the style 39 wheels for the M3 are substantial enough for the heavier load of the X3
    - need to make sure that the offset ET41 fits ok (style 111 or 204 wheels for the X3 have ET46) ... given the wider tire this is likely good
    - the 255/50R17 has outside diameter 27.04" similar (only a tiny bit smaller) than the OE 235/55R17 27.18"
    - and the 255 width should be ok on an 8.5 inch wide wheel

so it likely comes down to taste... for me those style 39's look ok on an M3, but I am not so sure on an X3

.. but if YOU like them, then they are the better choice of the three you proposed IMO

X3 owner checking in. I upgraded to 19" M3 wheels from 17" about a year ago. Pirelli tires, I followed the OEM guide for fitment for tires since 19" wheels were optional when bought new. I will tell you my tire size in an additional post.

I live in NYC and there's tons of giant potholes everywhere. I guess avoiding them is muscle memory now since I used to have an A6 with 19" wheels as well. I haven't had a flat tire yet, but now that I said it, I probably will shortly afterwards.

It's about your driving style, like other forum goers say. I love the fact that on the highway at 85 mph, it is on rails, whether it is inclement weather or not. And the truck to me aesthetically doesn't look right with 17". Maybe 18" would be fine, 19" is a little big but I did get these at a good price.

TL, DR; I am very happy with the 19" wheels. Just make sure they aren't heavier than the 19" OEM option.

    e83onstick, got pics?
I test fitted my DS2s and the fit perfectly. Obviously the e36 tires don't.. but I'm getting new tires like I said. Think I'm gonna do it.

The X3 doesn't weigh that much more than the e36 M3. 300kg difference or so.

I found out today that one of my style 69 wheels has a slight bend. I also have some 18x8 M-Pars and 2 front wheels from my e39 M5 but the offsets are too aggressive for an X3 that my wife will be driving. I'll still put new tires on the 19"s though. The fronts are still good, just need the rears. What do you guys do about the TPSMS? Do you change the rubber washers or just leave them if they aren't leaking? Should I just buy new ones for the new wheels? I would love to just code them off..

.. don't know anything about TPSMS .. the technology is too new for me ...
.. but if buying tires for the X3 I would buy 4 all of the same tread at the same time .. then you have no issues with different tires on the all wheel X-drive system

Yep that's for sure. That's the main reason for going squared. Ordered some Hankook Ventus RH06 tires today. I'll post back with the after pics.

I got the tires, wheels, and new RDCs in. The ride is great, but I have to admit I like the look of the 19" M-Sport wheels better. But it's the wife's car and new tires are more important. I will eventually go with squared 19"x9"s and the 255/40/19 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3 all around.
